CPD: Revisiting Core Competences

The continuing professional and personal development (CPD) of therapists is vital to ensure that service users consistently receive the best therapy.
Often, experienced therapists follow CPD in a linear way, that is increasingly specialist, as their knowledge and skills develop. The assumption underpinning the Revisiting Core Competences training is that the ongoing development of practitioners is not a linear process, but rather a cyclical process where the foundations of CBT should be revisited as development continues.
Underpinning features of this training emphasise:
  • Evidence-based practice
  • Competency frameworks
  • Self-reflection and self-assessment of development needs
Therapists will be asked to identify their development needs prior to the training, and these will be addressed using a combination of both didactic and collaborative teaching methods, with a focus on evidence-based practice and competency frameworks. The training is, therefore, tailored to the therapy team, however the training will include:
  • Defining self-assessment of CBT practice
  • Reflecting on common difficulties encountered in client-work
  • Teaching on relevant CBT theory and practice and related competency frameworks
  • Developing medium to long-term action plans in relation to development needs
Target audience:
CBT teams within a primary-care mental health setting

Experience:
Participants should be trained, or training in CBT and working with common mental health problems (e.g., depression, OCD, PTSD etc.).
